International (now under Traton Group/Navistar) has refreshed its lineup significantly with the LT Series replacing the ProStar and the HV replacing the WorkStar. These trucks offer competitive pricing and strong performance, often at a lower price point than Peterbilt, Kenworth, or Freightliner.

The Value Proposition
International trucks typically cost 10-20% less than comparable Peterbilts or Kenworths. This lower entry price means:
- Lower monthly payments for the same capability
- Smaller down payment needed in dollar terms
- Faster payoff if you maintain the same payment level
- More accessible for newer businesses and challenged credit
The tradeoff: International trucks historically have lower resale values than PACCAR products. A 5-year-old LT might retain 40-50% of its value vs 55-65% for a comparable 579 or T680.
Financing Rates
International trucks get standard commercial vehicle rates from most lenders:
| Credit Range | New International | Used (1-5 yr) | Used (6+ yr) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 700+ | 5.99%-8.49% | 7.49%-10.49% | 9.99%-13.99% |
| 650-699 | 8.49%-12.49% | 10.49%-14.99% | 13.99%-18.99% |
| 600-649 | 12.49%-17.99% | 14.99%-19.99% | 18.99%+ |
| Below 600 | 17.99%+ | Case by case | Limited |
Navistar Financial vs Independent Brokers
International's captive lender (Navistar Financial) competes with their rates on new trucks. But independent brokers like Brobas can often find better terms on used Internationals, especially older ProStar and LoneStar models.
The ProStar Question
The ProStar was International's bread-and-butter highway truck before the LT Series. Used ProStars are now among the most affordable Class 8 trucks on the market:
- 2016-2018 ProStar: $20,000-$40,000
- Maxxforce engine models: $15,000-$25,000 (cheaper but riskier)
- Cummins powered: $25,000-$45,000 (preferred by buyers and lenders)
Warning: ProStars with the Maxxforce 13 engine are harder to finance. Many lenders either decline them or require larger down payments due to known engine reliability issues. If you're looking at a ProStar, get one with a Cummins ISX.
LoneStar for Owner Operators
The LoneStar is International's premium offering, competing with the Peterbilt 389 and Kenworth W900 for the owner operator market. It offers a distinctive look with strong performance.
LoneStars hold their value better than standard Internationals, making them easier to finance and better long-term investments.
Medium Duty: MV and CV Series
International's medium duty trucks (MV and CV series) are popular for:
- Box truck/delivery applications
- Landscaping and service bodies
- Small dump trucks
- Tow trucks and wreckers
These trucks often don't require a CDL (under 26,001 GVW), expanding the pool of potential buyers and making them easier to finance.
