Section 179: The Big One
Section 179 lets you deduct the FULL purchase price of your truck in the year you buy it, up to $1,220,000 for 2026. This means a $70,000 truck purchase can reduce your taxable income by $70,000 in year one.
Important: You must use the truck for business at least 50% of the time. For most owner operators, this is 100%.
Per Diem: Free Money Most O/Os Miss
The IRS allows truck drivers to deduct $69/day for meals when away from home overnight. At 250 days on the road, that's $17,250 in deductions. At 80% deductibility (current rate), that's $13,800 off your taxable income.
You don't need receipts for per diem. You just need a log showing you were away from your tax home overnight.
Quarterly Estimated Taxes
Owner operators must pay estimated taxes quarterly:
- Q1: Due April 15
- Q2: Due June 15
- Q3: Due September 15
- Q4: Due January 15
Set aside 25-30% of net income each month in a separate account. Missing quarterly payments triggers penalties.
